The major cause of water quality problems in North Carolina and in the United States is "non-point source" pollution. Non-point source pollution comes from many places and by definition can not be traced to one particular source. Non-point source pollution can come from homes, parking lots, highways, development, the atmosphere and agriculture.
The North Carolina Agricultural Cost Share program was established in 1984 to help reduce the sources of agricultural non-point pollution to North Carolina's waters. The NCACSP helps owners and renters of established agricultural operations improve their farm management by using Best Management Practices (BMP's). These BMP's include vegetative, structural or management systems that can improve the efficiency of farming operations as well as reducing the potential of surface and ground water pollution.
Participants in this program can be reimbursed up to 75% of a predetermined average cost for each BMP installed. 25% of the cost is the responsibility of the farmer.
The Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District has
received a special allocation of funds to be used in the Sandy Creek Watershed
area of the county. Any landowner, farming operation, or nursery operation is
eligible for cost-share assistance. The watershed has been designated
impaired/impacted by DWQ and the District is interested in working with
individuals to install Best Management Practices (BMP’s) to improve water
quality in this watershed. Field Borders, Sod-based rotation, Cropland
conversion to grass or trees, and livestock exclusion from creeks and streams
are excellent practices for slowing erosion from fields before reaching the
streams.
If you are interested in doing your part to improve water quality in Franklin
County and the state, contact the district field staff at 919-496-3137x3
And remember, “All Things Are Connected”
The NCACSP now provides funding for limited resource farmers! The limited resource farmer can be reimbursed up to 90% of a predetermined average cost for each BMP installed. 10% of the cost would be the responsibility of the farmer. To see if you qualify as a limited resource farmer please contact Charles Bass or stop by our office.
